Swatantrapur

Glancing through  the Hindustan Times dated 24th August, 2016, I noted ,that it carried an article on Swatantrapur , an open jail in Maharashtra. It was a full page write up.I decided to read it later. I mused that perhaps , V. Shantaram's classic "Do Aankhen Barah Haath " must have inspired the open prison in Swatantrapur .And I was completely wrong  ! In fact, V. Shantaram was so touched by the Swantantrapur experiment, that, he made the classic, "Do Aankhen Barah Haath " .This movie won the Golden Globe award, the first for an Indian film !  I get goose bumps every time, I watch the film Or for that matter ,that iconic song," Ae, Maalik ,tere bande hum.........taki hanste huwe  nikle dum ."

A social reformer of Polish origin ,Maurice Friedman called Bharatanand was a resident in Gandhiji's Wardha ashram  during late 1930s. He got friendly with the rulers of the  erstwhile Aundh state. During 1937-1939,Mahatma,Friedman & the Raja of Aundh,Balasaheb Pant made a blueprint to transfer power to the people  of Aundh .This was the Aundh experiment based on the self -rule idea. The Aundh people had a full fledged  representative government in Pre Independence India , thanks to the constitution which was brought into being, on 29th January, 1939 in Aundh.

The success of the Aundh experiment prompted the  next step. Balasaheb & Friedman wanted to  set up a colony  to integrate the convicts back into society through prison  reforms. This was to be done by shifting the prisoners to an area where they could feel  free. Thus , was born Swatantrapur or free town , a 57 hectare open prison colony in Atpadi taluka, Sangli District , Western Maharashtra.

In Swatantrapur, the convicts or the inmates till land, as daily wagers. Some of them stay in the colony with their families while others stay alone. Daily routine for residents is to assemble at eight in the morning for attendance & prayers .Next, they start working on the farms , take a lunch break & return to farming.By six in the evening, they go back to their tenaments in the colony.

Inmates to the Swantantrapur vasahat are selected by  committees in each of the 13 open jails in Maharashtra.Only prisoners who have shown consistently good behaviour & are heading towards the end of their imprisonment periods get selected . Generally, the committee selects every three years .Those who have spent more time in open jails are chosen first. Next, the list is sent to the Government. After the government 's ratification of the persons selected, the prisoners are shifted to Swantrantrapur. The inmates spend 2-4 years in the colony. The remainder of their imprisonment period is suspended by remission .They are then set free .

Terrorists and others who committed offences against the State & those having mental & health complications are never selected. Even those who have pending trails are ineligible for Swantantrapur.

The colony consist of tenements  & earlier there was no power supply. The children of the prisoners attended local school. The farm tilling ensures that the families of the prisoners can make ends meet. The Swantantrapur colony is a must visit tourist spot in Sangli.

Many prisoners chose to stay back in neighbouring villages as these villages have been kind enough to accept the ex-inmates into their midst as one of their own.Fights are rare & hardly any inmate has broken any rules. The inmates would rather stay there than be sent back to jail for any misbehaviour. The reformation & rehabilitation tales of  Swantantrapur  have paved the way towards more open colonies on a pan Indian basis.

Some years back when Atpadi was hit by drought, the inmates helped protect cattle to assist the farmers. The convicts  even offered to dig up reservoir. Locals have grown up watching the colony inmates & find them to be as human as themselves.

The colony is like an ashram where inmates live in harmony .After all, Swantantrapur signifies that even convicts can dream of freedom & revel in it !

Book Review : Vikram Rana Investigates

The novel "Vikram Rana Investigates " is a package deal of two murder mysteries in one book.As the title says, the detective is Vikram Rana who is probing the mysteries.

The tales are from Hyderabad.Vikram Rana is an ex-cop turned private detective. He gets involved in the case of Richa Lohia's death as Richa's brother in law Rohan is a childhood friend of Vikram Rana. This is Vikram's first case. There are many suspects in the case. Vikram & cop Reddy assist each other in trying to unravel the identity of the killer. Richa's eldest son ,Kinshuk is a drug addict & is the first suspect. Rohan is suspected to have had an affair with Richa. Rohan vehemently denies it though others are unsure . Rohan's wife Kiara cannot control her jealousy as she starts talking .Is she the killer ? Gaurav, Richa's hubby had hired a pretty governess ,Juhi. And Richa had terminated her services. Did she suspect that hubby & governess were having an affair ? Juhi's Uncle is an actor. Is he involved ? There are many twists & turns in the story. This makes it very intriguing.

The second case is another murder mystery of a rogue builder, Krishna Dhavala. He had got his partner Raju killed some time before. Late Raju's son Pavel is the suspect .His mother approaches Rana  to save her son. Rana accepts the case .He & Reddy start working on different angles to trace the murderer. Krishna was wanted dead by many including the minister with whom he was too close .Krishna's wife is suspected of murdering Krishna as he was a womaniser & she stayed away from him. And she has returned home after his death . Krishna' driver cum bodyguard has a expensive lifestyle. Is he the killer ? Vikram Rana & Reddy are able to catch the killer after a few more bodies are discovered.

Vikram Rana is a foodie & irritates his health conscious wife Veena no end. He dislikes health food & loves junk food .This makes for a lot of humour. Vikram Rana's character is nicely etched. He is someone who has a keen eye for beauty though he is always careful that it does not interfere in the discharge of his duties as an investigator.

Loved the book as it gives a desi   perspective to murder investigations. The location is Indian, the characters are Indian & the mannerisms, the problems , the chaos in the city ...all are desi. That is such a much needed change !

Read an excerpt...

From "The Mysterious Affair of the Lohia Mansion"
"Kinshuk sprang out of bed and followed his uncle, Rohan along the passage to his mother Richa’s bedroom.
Rohan’s wife, Kiara joined them along with Richa’s personal maid Lakshmi and two more servants. Everyone seemed to be in a state of awestricken fear.
Kinshuk turned to his uncle, ‘What should we do? Father is not here.’
Never had Kinshuk’s weak nature been more apparent, Rohan thought in distaste. Rohan rattled the handle of his sister-in-law Richa’s door violently, but with no effect. The whole household was aroused by now. The most alarming sounds were audible from the interior of the locked bedroom. Clearly something must be done."
What could have been going on the room? What triggered it?
Mrs Lohia was lying in her bed having seizures. In her agony she must have overturned the bedside table. As they entered, her limbs relaxed and she fell back on her pillow.
"I cannot see properly" she complained. Rohan and Kinshuk looked at each other helplessly. A strangled cry from the bed startled them. A fresh bout of pain had seized Richa. The seizures were terrible to behold. At that moment dr Agnihotri pushed his way into the room authoritatively. At the same instant, Richa cried "Rohan.... Rohan" then she fell back on the pillows motionless.
Why was Richa killed? Why did she take Rohan's name?
From the Sonia Sinha case:
"He reached the meeting place at 8 pm sharp. The headlights of his car revealed a woman in a burqa waiting by the roadside. She waved her hand. Krishna stopped the car and she got in. As she removed her veil, Krishna started in surprise. At the same time another man got into the back of his car. Confused, Krishna looked at the man. Then his eyes widened in fear."
Whom did Krishna see? Who was the woman in burqa?

Book Review : The Mahabharata Code

There are many, who are influenced by Mahabharata, the great epic. So many versions are there. So many tales inspired by it.

This novel is an innovative take inspired by the Mahabharata & how ! The author Karthik B. Rao uses  sarcasm & science to spin this web of a tale !

Narayan Rao or NR ( short for Non Resident ? ) is an astronomer with NASA .NASA wants NR to go on a mission to a planet, from which signals have been received . NR agrees. He meets Vyasa on the planet who claims to be the person, who dictated the epic to Lord Ganesha !  Vyasa wants to recreate the epic, once again, to make believers out of the present generation ! NR though skeptical ,agrees. And then , there is  no looking back. NR's son is taught by Vyasa & he begins to believe that he is  Krishna, the Lord & Arjuna's friend .NR gets discomfortable as he witnesses  the epic unfolding  before his eyes. Krishna rescues people of Gokul by way of holding the spaceship on his fingers. He seems to destroy his enemies through a discus type weapon which resembles sudarshan chakra ! NR gets nervous & cannot understand if he is watching the actual epic or a stage managed one, by the one, who calls himself Vyasa.

NR's wife is Sristhi,a computer programmer .She teaches her son  to operate the spaceship & other finer details. Is she comfortable that her son believes that he is Krishna ? Or is Vyasa using NR's son, for his own grand agenda ? Does the war take place ? And if so , with what consequences ? Is NR'son really the Lord Krishna ? Is Vyasa, who he claims to be ? Is duplicating the epic in the present time, going to make people believers ?

A highly engaging tale narrated with humour & logic ! Like , the bow which was lifted by Arjuna in Draupadi's swayamvar is "the bow is an advanced weapon which is biometrically protected & could be unlocked only if it matched the fingerprints of one of the descendents of the sky gods or, in other words,us the Pandavas ." And this means ,everything was fixed OR was it ? There is a mention, of a brick like device, through which people could communicate even when they are miles away from each other ! The scientific explanation is simply stated making it likeable & believable !

The tale spans different time zones & keeps going to & fro from one zone to another. This makes it all the more appealing to the reader. A must read, to know the probable science behind the epic tale !

THE MAHABHARATA CODE
by
KARTHIK K.B.RAO

Blurb

"The Mahabharata Code is a personal account of the main protagonist Narayan Rao (NR), who claims to be an astronomer with NASA. NR and a few other crew members agree to take part in the NASA mission to visit this mystery planet from which they had received mysterious signals. Here, they meet a man with a long flowing white beard, and he introduces himself as Vyasa. He reveals that he has a crazy plan in mind and seeks NR and his members’ help in implementing this plan. He intends to recreate the entire Mahabharata on this planet to restore the faith of the primitive simpletons here.

As the Mahabharata incidents start unfolding, NR realizes that Vyasa intends to recreate them page by page here, if not paragraph by paragraph. Also NR begins to realize that his son, Krishna, who is being groomed by Vyasa as Vishnu’s avatar, is nothing more than a pawn in Vyasa's scheme of things. Other incidents of Mahabharata also unfold according to the original epic. Pandavas and Kauravas grow up hating each other and finally the restaging plan culminates with both the warring sets of cousins facing each other in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Inexplicably, like the original epic, Arjuna develops cold feet seeing his own cousins, teachers and relatives on the opposite side. He seeks Krishna’s divine intervention. Is the brainwashed “alien” Krishna prepared for this intervention?"

Book Review : Shamsuddin's Grave.

Paromita Goswami's debut novel is empathetic .It has pathos .It depicts the sheer helplessness of millions of poor in our country, who migrate to cities for a better life & how.

Shamsuddin is a farmer who has become landless. He is in rural Assam. He goes to Guwahati to earn a living.  He only  manages to survive .When he returns home after a long gap , he realises that his family is lost. He grieves & yet returns to Guwahati. He keeps moving from place to place .He is unable to have a place to call home. He is taken in, to look after cattle by Snehlata. He does odd jobs for Snehlata & stays in the barn with the cattle. Snehlata's niece Latika gifts a cycle rickshaw to Shamsuddin who is overjoyed that someone cares for him. In fact, both Snehlata & Latika care for him.

The downtrodden will return favours more than they receive .This is brought out, so clearly in the book .Shamsuddin carries supplies for Latika's NGO in the cycle rikshaw. Latika is too bold & active in volunteer work in the slums, to the utter discomfort of  her boss, Debjyoti. Is Debjyoti being cautious or is it love ? What about Latika ? Can she forget her painful past & accept what today offers ? Latika meets a daughter- mother duo in course of her work. She wants to help & the mother daughter duo couldn't care  less. They disappear .Is Latika able to help them ?

Shamsuddin meets his daughter & her family by accident. He makes home with them.Floods ravage his home. What happens to his daughter & family ? Does Shamsuddin survive ? Does the Government compensation for flood victims bring any relief to Shamsuddin  ? What about Latika & hers social work ?

The climax is sarcastic & makes one wonder, if one can claim any space as one's own ?

The story is a saga of the poor who do not know about their rights. They are so busy surviving that they cannot think of anything except making both ends meet. And this fight for survival gets repeated in the next world as well !

The tale gives a glimpse into the Bangladeshi illegal migrants issue which continues to make headlines in North East India. It narrates the beauty of Shillong & the might of the Brahmaputra which causes misery year after year . It showcases the strength & grit of the people of Assam who are so much like the people of  the rest of India. Reading the book is a must read , to understand the condition of the poor & their flight for a better life.

Read an excerpt

It was 2.00 a.m. in the morning and Kalapahar woke up to the cries of people. People didn’t know what was going on. There was no electricity and all they heard were the cries of women, children and men for help. Stampede of people running across the roads towards the uphill area shouting for help.
Latika too woke up hearing the cries. She switched on her night lamp but there was no electricity. She stepped down from her bed and landed into knee deep water soaking her pyjamas. Terrified, she reached for the torch on the night table and switched it on. She was traumatized to find her room flooded. The water level almost reached her bed wetting the mattress. She didn’t waste time and waded through the water to check on her father’s room. It was similar situation there too, with the only difference that the old man was sound asleep due to medication. She woke him up and went to check the other rooms.
It was similar sight all around. Dining chairs, gas cylinder, utensils, tables everything floating across the rooms. She turned off all the switches and whatever valuables she could lay her hand upon, she collected in a bag. Then she pulled a chair on top of her father’s bed and made the old man sit on it with the bag. She checked the water level outside through the glass window with the hope of evacuating the house. But it was worse and riskier to wander out with an old man in flood water at night. She knew she could not make it.
Help was unreachable as of now, as everyone was fending for themselves. She heard the neighbors crying for help but no one listened. Even the cell phone network was jammed. She knew she could not do anything but wait. At last she pulled a chair on the bed and sat down beside her father clenching his hands in hers. Both prayed eagerly for all this to be over.

Atmahatya katha.

Sriram Ayer's, "The Story of a  Suicide " is the story of generation next. It is the tale of Charu, Mani , Hari & Sam .Charu, Mani, Hari & Sam study in the same college. Some are freshers & others are  older. Sam is born with a silver spoon. Hari has a doting family.Mani has worked extremely hard, to get admission to the institution. Charu is the one, who can make heads turn ,especially , those  of males.

Mani 's language skills are wanting. He is teased & taunted for his inability to communicate & express .He tries to end life. He is rescued in time, by Sam, professor Alex, Charu & others. Sam cannot stop looking at Charu. He feels, that he is in love though it is not. Like he felt, he was in love with Priya, earlier. Charu is not so sure. Hari has terrible childhood memories of being abused. He has been unable to confide, in anyone, about his trauma. He feels, Mani is the one friend who will empathise. Is Hari  right, in feeling that Mani ,will be his confidante ? Charu 's phone is hacked, so much so, that her pictures are being taken automatically. She discovers this hacking & gets scared .She leaves her phone with friends. And then , an  intimate  act goes viral. It stuns & shocks all .And wrecks havoc. Someone decides that the time has come to end it all & how .

Who is behind the hacking of Charu's phone ? Is he or she, a friend or a frenemy ? Do Sam & Charu break up or make up ? What about Hari ? Does he discover a true friend in Mani ? Does Mani overcome his language problem? Or is he back to thinking about ending his life yet again ?

"The Story of a Suicide " is taut & thrilling. It arouses curiosity & the reader reads faster & faster to know what will happen next. The illustrations by Ghana look like  watercolors & are eye catching. There are thirty one chapters & each chapter can be accessed separately. Each chapter has concerned issues stated by the side of the chapter. It is an audio book which can be heard in addition to being read on mobile, tablet, etal.

Sam is so sure of himself, that he never gives a damn. Charu opines that all males are losers & yet ,never lets it show in her behaviour. She is ready to help in need.Hari is doubtful of Charu. Mani thinks Charu has got all the timing wrong. Each characters is etched clearly. The characters are representative of the young generation who are confident yet vulnerable. They have their own demons & feel so overwhelmed that they feel that suicide is the only solution.Though, all youngsters are on the social network most of  the time, they are unable to confide & share their fears with their friends & family. They feel, that all are ganging against them, & they have to just end their lives. They keep, all their pent up emotions to themselves. They need to talk it out of their sytems with family & friends. At the most, they may get dejected by many.Yet, there will be one or two who will understand them. And most of the  fears are simply unfounded. People do not recall supposed follies of others, as public memory is short .Moreover, there are fresh follies happening on a daily and even hourly basis. And ,we are all human. To err is human , to forgive divine.

And what resonated with me, was the fact, that men will rant about women after break up .And the rants  will get sexist, because she is public property. Means , she wronged him, so all  need to find faults with her. Males are always right, females always wrong. And yet , all will continue to lust after her. It only comes to this, that all girls are  bodies to be ogled at , nothing more. Just goes to prove, that men seldom  love, they just want sex.And men slip fast .And they have no regrets about being disloyal etc. There are no emotions. Love sorry lust is all physical. Men have big egos which get hurt easily. And men will go to any extent to nourish & even refurbish their pricked  ego/s.Never mind the consequences.

And this katha  is a tale of awareness. It narrates that  things can go unexceedingly wrong & how.It also tells, that overconfidence can make us overlook our errors of judgement .And all this may create such conditions, that it ends the world for someone who is completely unaware & innocent of it all .So , the youngsters need to care .They should behave  such that  their acts & omissions should not hurt their fellow humans. When a person commits suicide, more than anything it points towards friends & family who failed in preventing the loss of life. All lives are worthy  As Oscar Wilde put it ,"The only difference between the saint and the sinner is that every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future."
